This is the page where most sites publish a number. We are not going to, and the reason is worth stating: there is no national off-grid fuel payment with a published rate. What exists is a devolved and discretionary patchwork, and a single figure would be wrong for almost everybody reading it.
How the money actually reaches a household
- 01Central government allocates a discretionary fund to upper tier local authorities for a defined period.
- 02Each council writes its own eligibility rules inside the guidance. Some target existing benefit recipients, some run an open application, some work through referral partners.
- 03The award may arrive as a voucher, a direct payment, or a payment straight to a fuel supplier against a delivery. Off-grid households are often handled by that last route specifically because a tanker delivery is a lump sum rather than a monthly bill.
- 04The round closes. The next round has different rules. This is why the answer to how much is it worth changes between one winter and the next.

Why off-grid households fall through
Most fuel support is designed around a metered monthly bill. An oil household does not have one. It has a delivery every few months for a few hundred pounds at once, and it needs the money before the delivery rather than after a bill. A household ordering 1,200 litres at 90.01p needs GBP 1,080.12 available on the day, which is a cash flow problem rather than an affordability problem, and the two are handled by different parts of the system.
If you are close to running out and cannot pay, ring the council before the tank is empty rather than after. A crisis award before a delivery is a different and easier process than an emergency delivery you cannot pay for.
